Abernethy Fun(d) Run:  Tuesday March 17, 2026

Get ready to lace up those sneakers (or inflate those dinosaurs)! We are thrilled to announce the Abernethy Fun(d) Run is March 17th.

This isn't just a run—it’s 280 person relay! To commemorate our amazing community’s 101st year, our students are teaming up for a 3-hour continuous relay. Our goal? 101 miles (or 808 laps around the track!) and a fundraising target of $15,000.

Why we run (and raise!)

The funds go directly back into our school community. Your support powers:

• The Eagles Reading Program: Our very own reading support program!

• Mini-Grants: Funding OBOB book sets, 5th-grade birdhouse supplies, magazine subscriptions, and more.

• New Library books and vital school resources.

The Inflatable Challenge

We want to bring maximum joy to the track. We are inviting parents and families to break out your inflatable costumes! Whether it’s a T-Rex, a unicorn, or a giant taco—if it’s inflatable, we want to see it (please note: costumes are for adults only).

• Have a costume but can't make it? We’d love to borrow it! Please email Ashley at ashley.wendler@gmail.com to coordinate a loan.

• Want to help? We need parent volunteers to help keep the relay moving and the energy high. Check Konstella for the sign-up soon.

The "Fun" in Fun(d) Run

Expect high energy, great music, and a lot of school spirit. We want a massive cheering section, so please come watch if you can!

What is the Fun Run? 

The Fun Run is a jog-a-thon style fundraiser held during school hours on Thursday, April 9, 2026.  Students run around the school grounds on a 1/5-mile paved course for 30 minutes.  There’s music, balloons and loads of encouragement around the course.  It’s surprising how many laps these kids can run!  Kindergartners average about 8 laps and 5th graders average about 10.  Each lap is counted by a volunteer at the start line. 

What are donations used for?

100% of proceeds go to the Abernethy School PTA.  Our contributions help to pay for the things that make Abernethy a great place to grow, including additional classroom teachers, instructional support, library staff, professional development, classroom libraries and teacher mini grants at Abernethy and at other schools around our district, via Portland Public Schools' Fund for PPS.

How do we collect online pledges?

Visit 99pledges. Pledges can come as single donations or a certain dollar amount per lap.  This personalized platform allows for long-distance relatives to easily participate, negates the need for cash/check collection, and the site automatically notifies donors of Fun(d) Run results and requests payments. 

What if we prefer to collect checks/cash? 

No sweat.  If you’d prefer to ask for pledges in person and collect cash/check donations, feel free. All cash/check donations should be delivered to our school office, with checks made out to Abernethy PTA.

How can I help?

So sweet of you to ask!  This event requires a good number of parent volunteers to run smoothly.  Please visit Konstella and sign up for a shift.  Most shifts only last about 30-45 minutes on the day of the Fun Run.  It’s a great way to get involved and watch your kiddo run.
