This Fall 2025, we launched a community led literary intervention program, the Eagles Reading Club (ERC), modeled after our highly successful former Reading Results program.
Our grassroots program utilizes the same Reading Results' proven methods, is backed by the science of reading and low cost University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) materials, that have served our Abernethy students so well these past two years. We are even improving our program by integrating decodable books to build excitement for reading, and provide students with take home practice materials.
Our ERC team serves up to 24 students in five grades with the goal of every student showing measurable progress towards reading at grade level. Our team will be staffed by three tutors and a program manager. Our 29 week program will run October through May, and tutors will work with pairs of students or one on one, three times a week.
Student progress is reported to teaching staff on a monthly basis, and the teaching team collaborates with the Abernethy reading specialist to help achieve optimal student outcomes. Program progress and achievements are reported to the Abernethy PTA mid-year and at end-of-year.
The Abernethy PTA will fund the ERC with a daily stipend of $50/day to each volunteer, and start up materials of tutoring manuals, books, and supplies.
We intend ERC to be a sustainable program with a volunteer group of parents, grandparents, or other community based tutors who will then in turn mentor and train new volunteers as the years pass. Our program will depend on the will of our community spirit rather than the whim of politics or funding. We made this happen!
