Tour de Ladd
10th Annual Tour de Ladd: Wednesday, October 4, 2017
A huge thank you goes to the Abernethy community for raising over $41,000 this year! And another thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make the event a success.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Since 2008, the Tour de Ladd has been held in the morning of the first Wednesday of October. The event provides great exercise and excitement for the kids and spectators and further promotes the school's commitment to lifelong wellness.
Prior to the event, students ask for support from family and friends, who pledge to donate a set amount based on participation or an amount per lap completed. Then, on the big day, the students ride bikes or scooters around the 0.4 mile course on the streets adjacent to the school while volunteers tally the number of laps ridden. The streets are closed to vehicular traffic during the event. There are several waves of riders, who ride for 10-20 minutes based on grade level. Non-riders participate in the cheering section.
All donations to Tour de Ladd are tax deductible. 100% of proceeds go to the Abernethy School PTA. These funds are used to continue our wonderful programs that include: music education, physical education, garden program, library, and our school kitchen garden. Your gift ensures that next year’s students will continue to have these important enrichment experiences that might not otherwise be provided.

Participation: All students who would like to participate must register for the event by Wednesday, September 27. Those that don't register will support classmates with teachers and parents in the cheering section.
The Ride: Students can ride bikes (with or without training wheels) or scooters. Skateboards are not allowed. Ride time is 10 minutes for Kindergarten, 15 minutes for 1st–2nd Graders, and 20 minutes for 3rd–5th Graders on the 0.4 mile course around the south rose garden and neighborhood streets blocked off to traffic.
Helmets: All students are required to wear a helmet. Reduced price/free helmets will be offered prior to the event.
Bikes & Scooters: They will be stored in the covered basketball courts (monitored by volunteers) before and after the event until 3:15. If your student is in an after school program, their bike or scooter will be brought inside the school at the end of the day.
Safety: Absolutely no racing or unsafe behavior will be tolerated. Experienced course marshals will be riding and monitoring safety. Unsafe riding will result in the rider being removed from the course immediately.
Parents: Sorry, no riding with your kids but please come and cheer them on!
Parking: All streets on and around the course will be closed to traffic. Drop-off and parking on the west side of the school is best.
The Tour de Ladd is a beloved, heart-warming Abernethy tradition. If you have not yet witnessed this event, don’t miss your chance! A great way to get close to the action is to volunteer for one of the many positions we must fill in order to keep the event safe and fun. We need many, many hands-on-deck, so please consider taking on one of the following positions:
- Stickers and helmet checkers
- Barricade watch
- Bike corral (monitors and a few who can help with basic bike repair)
- Runners (escort classes to corral and course)
- Lap counters
