Battle of the Books

Oregon Battle of the Books, or OBOB for short, is a nationwide competition between teams of young readers. BOB exposes students to a variety of literary genres and gives them a hands on opportunity to work as a team. All teams read and study the same selected group of books to prepare for "Battles" that are held at the end of the BOB season. Each battle pits two teams against each other and are formatted in question/answer style. Teams work together and use their combined knowledge to come up with each answer.  Refer to the Resources page to learn more about how the battles work, see sample questions, and view videos.

BOB teams compete at the school-wide level first. The top scoring team from each school advances to a state-wide competition. Click here for the state-wide Battle of the Books page.
Each BOB team is composed of 4 members. There is room for an alternate team member, who may participate in none, some, or all of the battles. The use/role of the alternate is up to each team to decide, within the official BOB rules. More specific info on BOB Team roles and requirements to come on the Teams Page.  Members can be any student at Abernethy Elementary in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. Teams can be mixed ages, grades and gender. Teams are assembled independently by students and parent coaches; they are not assigned by anyone. Often times students will begin talking with peers about who is on who's team. This can get confusing, so it's helpful to organize your team as early as possible!

Team registration for 2017-2018 is open; please visit the Teams Page!

Each team needs at least one ADULT coach. This person can be a parent, grandparent, friend, community volunteer, etc. The coach's responsibilities include organizing and supervising team meetings and communicating with team member's parents. Coaches can take on as much or as little responsibility as they choose. They are mainly there to guide the group and help them prepare for battles.

Teams form in the Fall and can begin reading and practicing immediately.  The Abernethy BOB battles are held late January into February, with the specific dates to be scheduled and communicated later in the BOB season (check the Calendar Page). Teams must be registered and fees paid by November 15, 2017 via the Teams Page for the 2017-2018 season.

2017-18 BOB BOOKS – GRADES 3-5
During the course of the BOB season, it is helpful for each team to have a full set of books to use during their meetings. The $25 fee per team fee is there for Abernethy to purchase and provide multiple copies of each book in the school library.  If you prefer to purchase any of the books and you have chosen the Abernethy PTA as your preferred charity for the Amazon Smile program, then your purchases will benefit our school.

The entire book list is also available on a single page at the Multnomah County Library website.
