Annual Appeal

To make your donation, select the DONATE NOW button below or the ANNUAL APPEAL DONATION icon at the bottom of the page. Or read on below for more information about the Annual Appeal including Frequently Asked Questions ("FAQs")

When you give to the Abernethy Annual Appeal, you invest in a scholar and an innovator. You invest in an artist. You invest in a musician. You invest in a problem-solver, a global citizen, and a keeper of the earth. You invest in your child.

The Abernethy Annual Appeal is the Abernethy Board’s primary annual fundraiser. It is a nearly three-week, direct giving campaign running from November 5 to November 22, 2018. It is the second of four fundraisers that occur throughout the year – the others are the Tour de Ladd, the Fund Run, and the Auction.

Our contributions help pay for the things that make Abernethy great including:

  • Additional classroom teachers
  • Instructional Support
  • Library staff
  • Professional Development
  • Classroom Libraries
  • Teacher Mini-Grants

To maintain current programs and staff, just to keep what we already have, we need to raise about $650 per student this year. The students in our school community do not have the time to wait for the legislature to fix Oregon’s education funding problems. This is our children’s one chance at a quality, well-rounded, 21st century education – which is the essential foundation for future success.

As always, any donation amount is appreciated so please give what you can.

As you most likely are well aware, Oregon’s public schools are woefully underfunded. Our schools rank in the bottom third for per pupil spending. Given each state’s gross domestic product, only four states have a lower effective tax rate for K-12 education: Arizona, North Carolina, and North and South Dakota. This translates to increased class size, decreased instructional support, and lack of essential staff development for teachers. In addition, Oregonian kids have one of the shortest school years in the nation. If we truly believe in equity including the opportunity to access a quality education, then we must take action by choosing to donate and/or support advocacy efforts:

  1. Donate now. Please consider supporting our children now.  The students in our school community do not have the time to wait for the legislature to fix the education funding problems.  This is our children’s one chance at a quality, well-rounded, 21st century education - which is the essential foundation for future success.  To maintain our current program, this equates to about $650 per child, or $50 a month. As always, any donation amount is truly appreciated.
  2. In addition, please take time to write a personal and thoughtful email to our state legislatures and/or Portland Public School Board.  A message with specific examples and personal stories can go a long way toward change.

How does it work? Please fill out the response card we sent home and have your student return it to their classroom in the green envelope. This year, we are switching up the competition a bit.  Parents, rather than students, are competing for prizes. The parents of the grade level that has the highest return rate percentage will be treated to a free (childcare) DATE!  Our goal is 100% participation, meaning every response card is returned. This does not mean you must donate – if you cannot, please just indicate this on the response card and have your child return it. Done.

You can enclose a check with your response card, or make a secure online donation at All contributions are confidential.

Using our secure recurring monthly donation feature on can make it easier to donate, and to donate more. For example, not everyone can donate $650 (the annual goal per student) at once, but could you do that if you paid $50 per month over a year instead? Or, if you would normally make a one-time donation of $50 or $100, if you instead made just a $10, $20, or even $30 recurring monthly donation, that would have a greater impact over the year.

Many employers – like Nike and Intel, but many smaller ones too – match employee charitable donations. Please ask if your employer offers donation matching. Grandparents and other extended family of Abernethy students are also often happy to give, especially around the holidays.

Thanks for helping to ensure Abernethy continues to be a great school for our kids!

What if I can't donate at this time – do I still return the green envelope?
Yes! While we hope as many parents will donate as possible, we understand some may not be able to.  We define 100% participation in the Annual Appeal to mean that all response cards are returned, not that all parents actually donate. Plus, your kids are counting on being in that first class to get all response cards returned so they can get their free coupon to Salt & Straw. So get those response cards returned ASAP, with or without a donation.

Is the Abernethy donation website secure?
Yes. The website runs on the Shopify platform in conjunction with Stripe, which is industry-standard and is used by over 200,000 ecommerce websites. ALL credit card information is handled securely.

Why does my shopping cart have $0?
Be sure to choose your donation amount and click the MAKE DONATION button not the ADD TO CART button to complete your transaction.

Do I have to donate online?
No, although we recommend it. If you prefer, you can write a check, made out to the "Abernethy PTA," with your response card. But if you'd like to set up recurring monthly donations you will need to do so online via the icon below or the donate now button above.

Is the $650 per student target the fund-raising goal for the Annual Appeal alone?
No. That is our annual goal for all four of our fundraisers this year – the Tour de Ladd, the Annual Appeal, the Fund Run, and the Auction.  But the Annual Appeal is our primary and largest fundraiser during the year, in part because it is a "direct giving" campaign, and does not have as much overhead costs as other fundraisers, such as the Auction. It is important that we raise as much as possible during the Annual Appeal.

Can I make a donation from my mobile device?
Yes. Our website is mobile-friendly, and many people have donated successfully by accessing the donation website right from their smart phone or tablet.

    Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. The Abernethy PTA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Tax ID and related information you will need to claim a deduction for a charitable donation will be included in your confirmation email (if you donate online) or letter (if you donate by check).
